Offence Summary

Robert Tempest was convicted of multiple child rapes and sexual assaults after systematically abusing a young girl through threats and coercion. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison at Teesside Crown Court.

Full Description

Robert Tempest, a 52-year-old man from Attlee Avenue, Blackhall Colliery, County Durham, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for committing a series of depraved sexual offences against a child several years ago. The case, heard at Teesside Crown Court, involved harrowing testimony from the victim, who detailed the profound impact of the abuse on her life.

Prosecutor Dr Christopher Wood outlined how Tempest preyed on the young girl, using threats to ensure her compliance with his deviant behaviour. Tempest admitted to one count of rape but denied the repeated rapes and sexual assaults, leading to a trial where a jury convicted him of four charges of rape and two counts of sexual assault. The abuse came to light when the victim, now a woman, revealed the extent of the trauma she had endured.

In her victim impact statement, read to the court, the woman described the lasting damage caused by Tempest's actions. 'I was terrified to be anywhere near him,' she said. 'He often told me that if I didn’t do it, he would make someone his favourite – I knew what that meant. It was my job to protect them, keep them safe from him.' She explained how the abuse had severely affected her relationship with her father and left her fearful of men, though her family had been supportive since she disclosed the events. Giving evidence was, she said, 'like reliving my worst nightmare over and over.'

Mitigating on Tempest's behalf, Kate Barnes acknowledged the hideous nature of his wrongdoing, noting that he accepted responsibility and expressed deep remorse for the impact on his victim. However, Judge Advocate Tom Mitchell was unequivocal in his condemnation during sentencing. 'You pleaded guilty to one charge of rape but that was the extent that you were prepared to admit – that was only a small vulgar fraction of what you did,' the judge stated. He described Tempest's treatment of the victim as foul, emphasising that as a fully grown man, Tempest knew precisely what he was doing and took steps to conceal his behaviour.

In addition to the 17-year custodial sentence, Tempest was made subject to an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim, required to sign the sex offenders’ register for life, and issued with an indefinite sexual harm prevention order. The case was investigated by Durham Constabulary, with the sentencing reflecting the severity of what the judge called some of the worst offending possible.
