Offence Summary

Alan Spoor admitted to possessing over 3,000 indecent images of children across multiple categories on eight devices seized by police. He claimed he collected the images because he was bored and faces sentencing at Ipswich Crown Court in January.

Full Description

Alan Spoor, a 62-year-old resident of Clacton-on-Sea, appeared before Colchester Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 4 December 2024, where he pleaded guilty to serious charges related to child sexual abuse material.

In November 2023, officers from Essex Police executed a search warrant at Spoor's address on Colne Road, Clacton, seizing eight devices containing more than 3,000 indecent images of children. The images were categorised as follows: 807 category A images, which depict the most severe forms of child abuse or sexual violence inflicted on underage victims; 328 category B images; and 2,199 category C images. Spoor also admitted to possessing two extreme pornographic images and one prohibited image of a child.

During the court hearing, prosecuting barrister Celestia John-Baptiste informed the bench that Spoor had told officers he collected the pictures simply because 'he was bored'. This admission came after the devices were forensically examined following the police raid.

Mitigating, Caroline Woodley highlighted that Spoor had no previous convictions, describing him as a first-time offender. However, bench chair Lucy Lavender explained that the severity of the offences necessitated transferring the case to Ipswich Crown Court, as magistrates lacked the authority to impose a sufficiently long custodial sentence. Lavender stated, 'The case will be transferred to Ipswich Crown Court because magistrates could not pass a sentence long enough to punish Spoor for his offending.'

Spoor will be subject to notification requirements under the Sex Offenders Register, obliging him to inform a designated police officer of any changes to his personal circumstances until his sentencing. He is scheduled to appear before a Crown Court judge in the first week of January 2025 for sentencing, where a more severe penalty is expected.

The case was reported by the Clacton and Frinton Gazette, with coverage by senior crime and court reporter Daniel Rees. Essex Police's investigation underscores ongoing efforts to combat the possession and distribution of child abuse imagery in the region.
