Offence Summary

Jason Day admitted to possessing multiple categories of indecent images of children, including 23 of the most serious category A type, and was placed on the sex offenders' register pending sentencing.

Full Description

A 43-year-old man from Lowestoft has pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children at Great Yarmouth Magistrates’ Court. Jason Day, of Marine Parade, appeared before magistrates on charges related to images held in January 2023. The case, reported by EDP24 crime correspondent Simon Parkin, highlights the severity of the offences, with all sentencing options remaining open, including the possibility of imprisonment.

Day faced four charges of possessing indecent images of a child. Prosecuting, Holly Postle detailed that Day had 23 category A images, classified as the most serious due to their explicit and harmful nature. Additionally, he pleaded guilty to possessing 45 category B images and 61 category C images, along with 46 prohibited images of a child. These categories reflect escalating levels of indecency and exploitation, with category A involving the most graphic content. A further charge of engaging in sexual communication with a child for sexual gratification, alleged to have occurred in 2022, was withdrawn by the prosecution with no evidence offered.

Magistrates emphasised the gravity of the situation during the hearing. They ordered an 'all options' pre-sentence report to assess Day's background, risks, and circumstances, stating they lacked sufficient information at this stage. 'We are not ruling out a prison sentence,' the bench informed Day, underscoring the potential for custodial punishment. In the interim, Day was immediately placed on the sex offenders' register and given three days to notify police of his personal details, including bank accounts, passport information, and any aliases.

Day was granted unconditional bail until his sentencing hearing scheduled for November 1. The case was heard at Great Yarmouth Magistrates’ Court, with the offences investigated by Suffolk Constabulary, the police force responsible for the Lowestoft area. This incident serves as a stark reminder of ongoing efforts to combat child sexual exploitation through digital means, with authorities continuing to monitor and prosecute such cases rigorously.
