Offence Summary

Lydia Chadwick was jailed for three years after being found in possession of over 2,000 indecent images of children, including more than 700 in the most serious category, and for distributing such images online.

Full Description

An investigation by Cumbria Police has led to the conviction and imprisonment of Lydia Chadwick, a 36-year-old woman from Ulverston, for serious child sex offences involving indecent images. The case came to light following a police warrant executed at her home on Lightburn Avenue, where officers seized her mobile phones and laptop. Forensic examination of the devices revealed more than 2,000 indecent images of children, with over 700 classified in the most serious category, alongside an extreme pornographic image and a prohibited image of a child.

Chadwick faced charges including three counts of making indecent images of children and three counts of distributing them. Detectives uncovered evidence that she had been communicating online with others about child sexual abuse and even selling indecent images. At her trial at Preston Crown Court, Chadwick initially claimed to be mute due to a medical condition but later spoke in her own defence. A jury found her guilty at an earlier hearing, and on Tuesday, she was sentenced to three years in prison.

Detective Constable Ryan Parker, from Cumbria Police's cyber and digital crime unit, commented on the case: 'Lydia Chadwick stored images on devices belonging to her depicting harrowing images of child sexual abuse. She would communicate online with other people to talk about child sexual abuse as well as selling indecent images of children.' He emphasised the impact of such crimes, stating: 'Indecent images of children offences are far from a victimless crime. Not only do the images show children being abused, but demand for such images also then leads to further abuse occurring. We will continue to do what we can to target those who commit online child sexual abuse offences and bring offenders to justice.'

The sentencing at Preston Crown Court underscores ongoing efforts by Cumbria Police to combat online child exploitation. This case highlights the hidden dangers of digital devices in facilitating such offences and the determination of law enforcement to pursue and prosecute perpetrators.
