Offence Summary

Marek Woroniecki was jailed for 18 years after being found guilty of two counts of rape, actual bodily harm, intentional strangulation, and assault by beating on a woman in Cambridgeshire.

Full Description

A man described as a 'very dangerous individual' has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a horrendous attack on a woman in Cambridgeshire. Marek Woroniecki, aged 62 from Peterborough, left his victim with severe injuries including two black eyes, a split upper lip, and bruising to her legs and arms.

The attack came to light on New Year's Day when the victim sought help from a shopkeeper in Peterborough to raise the alarm. She had been traumatised in what police described as the most horrendous way. Woroniecki was arrested shortly after and faced trial at Peterborough Crown Court.

In July, Woroniecki was found guilty on multiple charges, including two counts of rape, actual bodily harm, intentional strangulation, and assault by beating. The court heard details of the violent assault, which demonstrated his dangerous nature. He was sentenced at the same court, with the judge ordering him to serve a minimum of 14 years before being eligible for parole.

Detective Constable Emma Curtis of Cambridgeshire Police commented on the case: 'Woroniecki traumatised his victim in the most horrendous way - he is clearly a very dangerous individual and I’m pleased he has been brought to justice. This trial was a testament to the courage and bravery of the victim’s unwavering commitment to getting justice despite the trauma she had gone through.' In addition to the custodial sentence, Woroniecki was handed a life-long restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to protect the public from further harm.

The case underscores the severity of sexual violence offences and the importance of victim support in achieving justice, as reported by ITV News Anglia on 20 September 2023.
