Full Description

In a landmark case at Oxford Crown Court, 80-year-old Lionel Wood from Broadway, Worcestershire, was sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment for historical child sexual abuse committed in Banbury during the 1980s. The offences, which involved repeated molestation of a young girl who trusted him, came to light decades later, leading to Wood's swift conviction by a jury in under an hour and a quarter.

The trial in June revealed a harrowing account of abuse, where Wood subjected the victim to what would now be classified as oral rape of a child, though charged at the time as four counts of indecent assault. The victim, now an adult woman, attended the sentencing hearing on 14 August to witness justice being served. In her poignant impact statement, read by prosecutor Brian Reece, she described her earliest memories as ones of physical and sexual abuse by a man she should have been able to trust. 'It’s something you can’t hide from,' she said, likening the trauma to a 'tattoo for all to see' that left her feeling like 'damaged goods'.

Recorder Samantha Presland, presiding over the case, highlighted the profound impact of Wood's actions, stating: 'What should have been happy childhood memories have been completely and utterly distorted.' The judge imposed the 14-year custodial sentence, with Wood required to serve two-thirds in custody before eligibility for release. Additionally, an indefinite restraining order was granted, barring Wood from contacting the victim for life, and he was placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.

In mitigation, defence barrister Catherine Ravenscroft noted that Wood continued to deny the wrongdoing and had attempted suicide since being remanded in custody following the trial. She also mentioned his concern for his elderly partner in her 90s, whom he had been supporting. The case was investigated by Thames Valley Police, whose image of Wood was released in connection with the proceedings. The victim's statement further detailed the long-term effects, including physical ill-health, substance misuse, depression, suicidal thoughts, and a pattern of abusive relationships, underscoring the enduring scars of the abuse that occurred when she was alone with the defendant.
