Offence Summary

Convicted sex offender who sexually assaulted a lone woman in Cambridge after previously being convicted of a similar offence.

Full Description

Cameron McNally, a 26-year-old man from Cambridge, was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on 7 May 2025 after pleading guilty to sexual assault. McNally, of Fortescue Road, Cambridge, had previously been convicted in March 2023 of sexually assaulting a woman on a bus.

The offence took place on 31 January 2025 in the Mill Road area of Cambridge. At approximately 8:20pm, McNally began following a lone woman along Devonshire Road. The victim noticed his shadow behind her and continued onto Mill Road, where she still felt she was being followed. McNally, who had his hood up, overtook her and withdrew cash at a Sainsbury’s ATM before grabbing her from behind, covering her mouth with his hand, and touching her. He then ran off towards Mill Road as the victim screamed.

The victim contacted the police, and McNally was arrested on 3 February 2025. On 7 May 2025, he was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment. He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for ten years and received an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim.

In her victim impact statement, the woman described the “lasting impact” of the assault, stating that she now felt “paranoid” about walking alone and that her social life had been affected, leaving her feeling “restricted” in what she could do in the evenings.

DC Will Kerslake of Cambridgeshire Constabulary, who led the investigation, said: “McNally carried out what must have been a terrifying attack for the victim, and he is clearly a danger to women. I’d like to praise the victim for her bravery in coming forward and helping us with a prosecution. I hope this sentence gives her some sense of closure to this traumatic period of her life.”
