Offence Summary

Azeem Subhani, part of a Halifax grooming gang, was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl over 50 times, serving half of a nine-year sentence before returning to the town.

Full Description

Azeem Subhani was convicted as part of a 15-man grooming gang in Halifax, West Yorkshire, that targeted vulnerable girls between 2009 and 2011. The group, mostly of Pakistani heritage, subjected victims to severe sexual abuse, with Subhani personally responsible for around 50 attacks on one girl starting at age 13. Tactics included supplying drugs and alcohol to control and exploit the youngsters, treating them as 'sex toys' in a two-year campaign of rape, trafficking, and assault.

Following a complex police investigation by West Yorkshire Police involving three trials, Subhani was found guilty at Bradford Crown Court in June 2016 of rape, sexual activity with a child, and supplying Class B drugs. He received a nine-year sentence, with the judge describing the abuse as 'beyond imagination'. The victim, who became addicted to substances as a result, was eventually taken into care.

  • The victim reported: 'I was used like a sex toy; it destroyed my family life.'
  • In 2019, six gang members' appeal was dismissed, affirming the convictions' validity.

Released after serving half his term, Subhani, now 33, has returned to his family home in Halifax's Pellon area, operating an online retail business. Spotted leaving a local mosque in January 2025, his presence has retraumatised victims. A Daily Mail interactive map highlighted him among 155 released groomers, criticising lax restrictions allowing returns to crime areas.
