Full Description

Bruce Thomas Wayne, a 33-year-old registered sex offender from Calne, Wiltshire, has been sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for breaching a sexual harm prevention order. The order, imposed by Wiltshire Police in October 2020 following a 2010 conviction for sexual offences and subsequent concerns about his behaviour, prohibited Wayne from engaging in voluntary or paid work without notifying his probation worker or participating in support groups for children or adults.

Despite these restrictions, Wayne began volunteering at a local community charity in Calne that provides support for individuals aged 14 to 70. The charity, acting responsibly, required a criminal background check before allowing unsupervised work. After recognising Wayne from a news story about his prior conviction, the organisation alerted Wiltshire Police, leading to his swift apprehension.

At Swindon Crown Court, the judge rejected Wayne's claim that he had misunderstood the terms of the order, determining instead that his actions were a deliberate attempt to gain access to vulnerable teenagers. Wiltshire Police described Wayne as 'a calculating and predatory offender' and emphasised the robust monitoring of registered sex offenders. PC Sarah Greenman stated: 'Wayne tried to claim that he had misunderstood the terms of his order, but the judge rejected this claim, finding that what he was actually doing was trying to gain access to vulnerable teenagers. Registered sex offenders are subject to regular monitoring by the police and I hope this case provides reassurance that if and when they try to breach any restrictions that are in place, then they are dealt with robustly by the police and the courts.'

This incident underscores the importance of vigilance in organisations working with vulnerable populations. Wayne, formerly known as Andrew Phillips, of Watermint Way, Calne, was thus held accountable for his breach, reinforcing public safety measures against predatory behaviour.
