Offence Summary

Liam Ross, a coach driver from Dartford, was jailed for 12 years after pleading guilty to ten sex offences, including the rape of a 12-year-old girl and the rape and sexual assault of a 16-year-old schoolgirl in Bexley.

Full Description

Liam Ross, a 30-year-old coach driver from Dartford, was sentenced to 12 years in prison at Woolwich Crown Court for committing multiple sex offences against schoolgirls in the borough of Bexley. Ross pleaded guilty to ten charges, including the rape of a 12-year-old girl, for which he paid her for sex while claiming he believed she was older. However, rape of a child under 13 is a strict liability offence in the UK, meaning the defendant's belief regarding the child's age or consent is irrelevant.

The court also heard that Ross was found guilty by a jury of raping and sexually assaulting another schoolgirl aged 16. Judge Ruth Downing described the case as 'difficult and rather disturbing', noting that Ross had pursued what he claimed were 'lawful but inappropriate' relationships with girls over the age of consent. Despite receiving a police warning letter about the risks of his behaviour with one 16-year-old, Ross continued undeterred, leading to further criminal acts.

Judge Downing accepted Ross's claim that he believed the 12-year-old victim was older, stating she had thought the same upon seeing the girl. Nevertheless, the severity of the offences, particularly against such young victims, warranted the substantial sentence. The Metropolitan Police led the investigation, underscoring the predatory nature of Ross's actions towards vulnerable schoolgirls in south London.
