Offence Summary

James Woodcock downloaded over 9,000 indecent images of children, claiming it stemmed from curiosity and an addiction to pornography rather than sexual interest in minors. He received a suspended sentence and was placed on the sex offenders' register for 10 years.

Full Description

James Woodcock, a 46-year-old business analyst from Wymondham, Norfolk, was sentenced at Norwich Magistrates' Court for possessing thousands of indecent images of children. The case came to light after specialist cyber-crime officers received a tip-off in 2023 regarding his involvement in online sexual material featuring youngsters.

During a police search of Woodcock's property on Verbena Drive, six electronic devices were seized, revealing more than 9,000 indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children. Among these, two images were classified as category A—the most serious, potentially involving penetrative sexual activity or sadistic acts—44 were category B, and the remaining 9,029 were category C.

Woodcock pleaded guilty to the charges of making indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs. In court, his defence, presented by mitigating solicitor Malcolm Plummer, argued that the offences were driven by a long-standing addiction to pornography rather than a specific sexual interest in underage children. Plummer stated: 'The pre-sentence report author suggests the offences demonstrate an interest in children, but that is not necessarily so. I think it demonstrates an interest in long-standing pornography which he is addressing.' He further explained that Woodcock's use of pornography began as escapism in his youth, but curiosity led him to the 'darker side', adding: 'He clearly has a problem he needs to get to grips with.'

The magistrates acknowledged the seriousness of the offences but noted Woodcock's efforts to seek help for his addiction, deeming him suitable for rehabilitation in the community. They imposed a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for 24 months, along with an order for 30 days of rehabilitation activity. Additionally, Woodcock was required to register as a sex offender for 10 years and was made subject to a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which permits police inspections of his devices and restricts his access to children.

The case was reported by the Eastern Daily Press, with the article highlighting Woodcock's claim of 'curiosity' as the motivation behind his actions.
