Offence Summary

Edwin Gill, a 70-year-old man from Bradford, raped a teenager after initially claiming consent, but later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to over eight years in prison.

Full Description

A 70-year-old man from Bradford has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for raping a teenager. Edwin Gill, of Dulverton Grove in Holme Wood, appeared at Bradford Crown Court on March 14, where he received his sentence following a guilty plea to the charge of rape.

According to prosecutor Jonathan Sharp, the incident began when Gill asked to cuddle the teenager, before touching their bottom and inner thigh, and then proceeding to rape them. The victim, described as shocked and helpless after the attack, confided in family members, leading to Gill's arrest. During police interview, Gill initially denied the rape but later admitted to having sex with the teenager, claiming it was consensual. However, after seeking legal advice, he changed his initial not guilty plea to guilty.

The court heard a victim impact statement in which the teenager detailed the severe consequences of the assault, including suffering from panic attacks, difficulties sleeping, and struggling to concentrate on studies. Judge Ahmed Nadim commended the victim for their 'courage and fortitude' in helping to bring Gill to justice, stating that Gill had broken moral and legal norms and that 'a child’s carefree days have been marred.' The judge further noted that the victim had endured 'degradation and humiliation' at Gill's hands.

Defence barrister Laura McBride addressed the court on Gill's behalf, expressing his genuine remorse and stating that 'he is truly sorry for what has happened' and 'can’t put into words the shame and regret that he’s felt.' Despite this, Judge Nadim imposed a sentence of eight years and nine months' imprisonment. Additionally, a lifelong sexual harm prevention order was placed on Gill, and he is required to register as a sex offender for life.

This case was reported by the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, with details emerging from the proceedings at Bradford Crown Court. West Yorkshire Police were involved in the investigation and arrest of Gill.
