A paedophile pensioner from Warrington has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for a series of despicable sexual abuses against a vulnerable child in Somerset during the 1980s. Michael Eckersley, aged 86 and residing in Coldstream Close, Houghton Green, was convicted by unanimous jury verdict at Taunton Crown Court following a trial. The offences, which took place over several years, involved at least 50 incidents of abuse against a pre-teenage boy whom Eckersley exploited by buying his affection with gifts to ensure silence and acceptance.
The court heard that the victim was raised in circumstances that made him particularly vulnerable, rendering him susceptible to those who showed kindness or provided material incentives. Judge Richard Shepherd, summing up the case, described how Eckersley abused the boy at the first opportunity, making the abuse transactional through lavish gifts. The prosecution, led by Virginia Cornwall, highlighted the extreme impact of the offending, including severe psychological harm, grooming, abuse of trust, and significant planning. Although some of the acts would constitute rape under modern laws, sentencing was applied based on the standards of the time, with higher maximum terms applicable today.
Convicted on 14 counts, including indecent assault of a child and gross indecency with a child. Abuse occurred in Somerset in the 1980s, coming to light 40 years later. Victim's impact statement detailed profound anger, heartbreak, self-harm, and lifelong suffering, stating: 'Michael Eckersley stole my childhood, my self-worth, and my potential.' In mitigation, defence barrister Hollie Gilberry noted Eckersley's age and health conditions would make prison particularly challenging, and that he had no prior or subsequent convictions, with positive character references. However, Judge Shepherd emphasised the devastating, decades-long resonance of the abuse. Addressing the victim directly, the judge commended his courage in coming forward: 'I am pleased to read that, although the abuse you suffered horribly had a devastating effect, you are beginning to come through the other side to rebuild your life and self-esteem. To you, I say “well done”. You have been courageous in coming forward, and this court and the community thanks you for doing so.'
Eckersley must sign the sex offenders' register for life upon release. Avon and Somerset Police investigated the historic case, confirming no custody image was available. The sentencing occurred on Tuesday, 5th November 2024, as reported by the Warrington Guardian.
