Offence Summary

Thomas Reay, a paedophile, raped and sexually assaulted two young girls over several years, robbing them of their childhoods. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison but died months later from bowel cancer while incarcerated at HMP Holme House.

Full Description

Thomas Reay, a despicable paedophile from Newcastle, inflicted horrific sexual abuse on two young girls over a number of years, subjecting them to multiple rapes and sexual assaults that stripped them of their childhood innocence.

The appalling offences came to light when the brave victims disclosed the abuse to a trusted individual, leading to Reay's arrest and subsequent trial at Durham Crown Court. The court heard how Reay had robbed his young victims of their childhoods through the sickening catalogue of child sex crimes. Last year, he was convicted and handed a 25-year custodial sentence, reflecting the severity of his predatory actions.

Following his conviction, Reay was imprisoned at HMP Holme House in Teesside. However, just months into his lengthy jail term, on 9 July 2025, the 67-year-old died behind bars from bowel cancer. An inquiry by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) was launched after his death, concluding that the medical care he received met high standards and was comparable to community care. The PPO report, recently released, stated: 'The healthcare team responded promptly and proactively to Mr Reay's needs. [The clinical reviewer] commended healthcare staff for sitting with Mr Reay as he was dying.' A fellow prisoner wrote to the PPO praising the healthcare and prison staff for their compassionate support during Reay's final days, allowing inmates to comfort him.

The PPO found no non-clinical issues of concern and made no recommendations. At an inquest held in December 2025, the coroner determined that Reay died from natural causes. Detective Constable Paul Armstrong of Northumbria Police, commenting after the sentencing, described Reay as having 'subjected the victims in this case to horrific ordeals over the course of a number of years' and labelled him a 'vile predator who stripped his victims of their childhood innocence through repeated abuse'. The case was reported by Teesside Live and Chronicle Live, highlighting the bravery of the victims in exposing Reay's abhorrent crimes.
