A 19-year-old man from Southampton, Jayden Jack Robert Smith, has been imprisoned for more than two years following his admission to serious sexual offences against children. The case, handled by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, came to light after incidents in July 2024 involving two young boys.
On 3 July 2024, Smith followed a child under the age of 13 in his car to a wooded area in Botley, isolating the victim before asking him to expose himself. This act formed the basis of the charge of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. Additionally, Smith admitted to two counts of having sexual communications with a child, which included sending explicit messages to a second boy from another county and inciting him to perform a sexual act, also occurring in July 2024.
Smith, residing on Blendworth Lane in Southampton, pleaded guilty to these offences at Southampton Crown Court on 5 February 2025, during the second day of his trial. Following his guilty pleas, two other charges—attempt to cause or incite a boy under 13 to engage in non-penetrative sexual activity and attempt kidnap with intent to commit a relevant sexual offence—were dropped. He was remanded in custody pending sentencing.
Sentencing occurred on 11 April 2025 at the same court, where His Honour Judge Rowland imposed a custodial sentence of two years and nine months. The judge remarked, "There are troubling aspects of your character that need to be addressed. This is a complex case with a complex young man who has committed offences against two young boys." Addressing one victim's family, Judge Rowland added, "I have read with regret the impact this has had on the boy and his family. But, I was struck in my meeting with the boy as to his vitality and strength of character for one so young, which will stand him in good strength as he continues to deal with what he was put through."
In addition to imprisonment, Smith must sign the sex offenders register for life and is subject to a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a five-year restraining order, and a deprivation order covering two mobile phones and a dash cam. Police Staff Investigator Rebecca Stevens of the Child Abuse Investigation Team stated after the hearing, "I am pleased for the victims and their families in this case that Smith has today been held accountable for his actions and justice has been served. He is now behind bars, where he belongs, and will have a considerable amount of time to consider the consequences of his actions." The investigation highlighted the bravery of the young victims and a key witness, underscoring the police's commitment to protecting children from abuse.
