Full Description

A 64-year-old man from Wirral has been sentenced to over a decade in prison for a series of historic child sex offences committed decades ago. Phillip Rogers, now residing on Hornby Road in Liverpool, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday, June 14, where he was convicted and sentenced for his depraved actions against young children.

The offences date back to the 1970s and 1990s, involving two separate victims. Rogers was found guilty of two counts of attempted sexual assault and four counts of indecent assault. Additionally, he had earlier pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of a child. The court heard details of the assaults, which were uncovered through a complex investigation by Merseyside Police's Unity Team, specialists in rape and serious sexual assault cases.

Detective Inspector Leanne Toole, who led the investigation, commended the bravery of the survivors. In a statement, she said: 'This sentence follows a lengthy investigation to bring Rogers before the courts so that he pays for his crime. Thanks to the determination and bravery of his survivors, Rogers will now spend a considerable amount of time behind bars for his actions.' She emphasised that time is no barrier to justice, stating: 'This sentencing shows that time is no barrier and we will always act on information about sexual assault, no matter when they occurred.'

Rogers received a custodial sentence of 10 and a half years specifically for the sexual offences against one child in the 1970s and another in the 1990s. He was also placed on the sex offender register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring upon any future release. The case highlights the long-term impact of such crimes and the police's commitment to pursuing historic allegations.

The investigation was prompted by reports from the survivors, whose courage allowed detectives to gather sufficient evidence for prosecution. DI Toole praised their 'courage and dignity' throughout the process, noting that Merseyside Police remains dedicated to protecting children from sexual abuse.
