Offence Summary

Jason O'Dell, a convicted rapist recently released from prison, threatened to kill a family member with a knife after being refused money, leading to his arrest and sentencing.

Full Description

A convicted rapist was sent back to prison after threatening a man with a knife just hours after his release. Jason O'Dell, who had completed a nine-year sentence for rape, arrived unannounced at a family member's home in Longstanton, Cambridgeshire, on February 17, 2025, seeking financial help to 'get back on his feet'.

The incident unfolded around 5.30pm when O'Dell turned up at the residence. The victim, aware of abusive letters O'Dell had sent from prison, refused to provide money. This refusal enraged O'Dell, who shouted, 'You are disrespecting me, who do you think you are?' He then grabbed a six-inch knife from a kitchen block and pinned the victim against the worktop, threatening to 'end him'. Despite the victim's pleas to put the knife down and discuss the matter, O'Dell pressed the blade harder into the man's side and repeated his threats to kill.

The victim managed to wrestle the knife away from O'Dell's grip and called out to another household member to contact the police. He then forced O'Dell out of the house. Police arrested O'Dell a few hours later in Cambridge. Initially denying the charges, he later pleaded guilty to threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a private place and making threats to kill.

On October 30, 2025, at Cambridge Crown Court, O'Dell was sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison. The case was investigated by Cambridgeshire Constabulary, with DC Samuel Andrews stating: 'O’Dell’s actions caused considerable fear and distress for the victim, in his own home. O’Dell is clearly a dangerous individual who has a history of offending and I hope the fact he’s back behind bars provides reassurance to those affected by crimes.' This incident highlights the ongoing risks posed by individuals with prior serious convictions upon release.
