Offence Summary

Alfie Rowbotham raped a woman in an alleyway while she was walking home in King's Lynn, leading to his initial jail sentence being increased from five and a half years to eight and a half years.

Full Description

Alfie Rowbotham, a 27-year-old resident of North Lynn, was convicted of rape following a harrowing incident that occurred on 19 September 2024. The victim, who was walking home in the early hours after a night out in King's Lynn town centre, was dragged into an alleyway and assaulted by Rowbotham. The attack was described in court as a brutal violation, leaving the victim traumatised.

Rowbotham appeared at King's Lynn Crown Court in June 2025, where, after an eight-day trial in March 2025 that resulted in a guilty verdict, he was initially sentenced to five and a half years' imprisonment. However, prosecutors deemed the sentence unduly lenient and appealed it. Following a hearing at the Court of Appeal on 16 October 2025, the sentence was increased by three years to a total of eight and a half years. This decision underscores the severity of the offence and the need for proportionate punishment in cases of sexual violence.

Norfolk Police, who investigated the case, released a statement highlighting the impact of such crimes on victims and the community. As reported by the Lynn News on 21 October 2025, the increased sentence reflects the court's commitment to justice for sexual assault survivors. Rowbotham, of Walpole Road, North Lynn, will serve the extended term in custody.
