Offence Summary

Brian Nutt raped a 16-year-old girl on a clifftop in New Milton after meeting with a group of friends, advancing to non-consensual sex despite her repeated refusals.

Full Description

Brian Nutt, aged 22 from the New Forest area, was convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl on a clifftop in New Milton, Hampshire, in August 2021. At the time of the offence, Nutt was 18 years old. The incident occurred after Nutt met the victim as part of a group of friends enjoying a social outing near the coastal cliffs.

According to court proceedings at Bournemouth Crown Court, the interaction initially appeared consensual, with the pair kissing. However, Nutt proceeded to engage in sexual activity despite the victim clearly and repeatedly stating 'no' and resisting. The prosecution highlighted the non-consensual nature of the act, describing it as a brutal violation of the victim's autonomy. Dorset Police investigated the matter, gathering evidence that led to Nutt's arrest and subsequent charges.

The case underscored the importance of consent in interpersonal relationships, with the judge emphasising the devastating impact on the victim during sentencing. Nutt showed no remorse in initial statements, but the court focused on the severity of the offence committed against a vulnerable teenager. In September 2024, Nutt was sentenced to five years' imprisonment for the rape, reflecting the gravity of the sexual assault.
