Offence Summary

Caerwyn Ash, a former MasterChef contestant and university academic, was convicted of possessing indecent images of children and extreme pornography, and attempting to pervert the course of public justice by blackmailing police with threats to publish explicit material involving officers.

Full Description

Caerwyn Harry William John Ash, aged 41, from Kilvey Terrace in St Thomas, Swansea, has been convicted at Cardiff Crown Court of serious sexual offences involving child abuse images and extreme pornography, alongside an attempt to obstruct justice through blackmail.

The case originated in April 2019 when South Wales Police executed a search warrant at Ash's partner's address in Morriston, Swansea, seizing electronic devices from a garden office as part of an unrelated investigation. Forensic examination of a computer hard drive and tower revealed indecent images of children and extreme pornography depicting acts of bestiality. Ash, who had denied any knowledge of the material, claimed during the trial that numerous people had access to the devices over the years and suggested the images might have been planted. He represented himself in court.

Ash, known publicly as a quarter-finalist in the 2016 BBC series of MasterChef and as a university academic, was charged in August 2022. His first court appearance was scheduled for Swansea Magistrates' Court on 21 September 2022. However, the day before the hearing, Ash entered Swansea Central Police Station and submitted a lengthy document threatening to distribute sexually explicit material involving South Wales Police officers to global media unless the proceedings against him were halted. This act led to additional charges of attempting to pervert the course of public justice.

At the trial in Cardiff Crown Court, Ash was found guilty on two counts of making (possessing) indecent images of children, two counts of possessing extreme pornography, and one count of attempting to pervert the course of public justice. He was acquitted on two further counts of making indecent images of children and one count of possessing prohibited images of children. Following the convictions, Ash was remanded in custody, with sentencing scheduled for 19 June 2023. The court heard detailed evidence from police examinations, as reported by Wales Online on 26 May 2023.

This case highlights the severe consequences of possessing child sexual abuse material and attempts to interfere with legal processes, with Ash's background in academia and television adding a layer of public interest to the proceedings.
