Offence Summary

Peter Joynes arranged child prostitution and engaged in sexual activity with a 14-year-old boy in a Birmingham-based sex exploitation case.

Full Description

Peter Joynes, 59, from Canberra Way, Highgate, Birmingham, was jailed for four years after being found guilty of arranging or facilitating child prostitution and sexual activity with a child. The case centred on the abuse of a teenager who absconded from care in 2009, prostituted in Birmingham's red light area until 2010, as heard at Warwick Crown Court.

Joynes participated in the ring led by Stephen Kelly, who exploited the begging boy by selling him for sex. The abuse involved stripping, stick beatings, rapes, and internet streaming. The victim's courage in re-reporting in 2012, after initial police inaction, was key to the convictions.

  • Joynes both facilitated and directly abused the victim.
  • His actions prolonged the boy's exposure to danger.

Judge Sylvia de Bertadano said: 'Each of you in your own way exploited this vulnerable boy.' West Midlands Police's review, led by Assistant Chief Constable Carl Foulkes, deemed the crimes 'horrific' and prompted force-wide changes. The trial also revealed another victim from Ronald Potter's history.
