Offence Summary

Gary Greenwood engaged in sexual communications with a decoy posing as a schoolgirl, believing her to be a child, in a sting operation. He received a suspended six-month prison sentence and a five-year sexual harm prevention order.

Full Description

Gary Greenwood, a 63-year-old man from Kidderminster, was involved in a paedophile sting operation where he believed he was communicating sexually with a young schoolgirl named Ruby from Worcester. In reality, Ruby was a fictional character created by a decoy, and Greenwood was caught attempting to engage in sexual communication with what he thought was a child in June 2023.

The case came to light through the efforts of individuals conducting the sting, leading to Greenwood's arrest. He appeared before magistrates in Worcester in September 2023, where he pleaded guilty to one charge of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. The proceedings highlighted the seriousness of online grooming attempts, with the decoy playing a crucial role in exposing Greenwood's intentions.

Sentencing occurred at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court, where magistrates determined that the offence was so serious that only a custodial sentence could be justified. However, Greenwood avoided immediate imprisonment and was handed a six-month jail sentence, suspended for 21 months. In addition to the suspended sentence, he was ordered to complete a six-month alcohol treatment programme and up to 40 days of rehabilitation activities. A five-year sexual harm prevention order was also imposed to restrict his behaviour and protect the public. Greenwood was further required to pay £85 in court costs and a £154 victim surcharge.

This case, reported by Worcester News court and crime reporter Leda Reynolds, underscores the dangers of online interactions with apparent minors and the effectiveness of decoy operations in preventing child sexual exploitation. Magistrates' comments during the hearing emphasised the gravity of the offence, stating it warranted custody despite the suspension.
