Offence Summary

Michael Geoffrey Smith sexually abused a primary school-age boy multiple times in the 1980s by exploiting his role in running a children's film club, causing grave psychological harm; he had prior convictions for similar offences in the 1970s and 1990s.

Full Description

Michael Geoffrey Smith, 66, who previously resided in Freemantle Close, Oakridge, Hampshire, was convicted of historical sexual abuse against a primary school-age boy in the early 1980s. Smith befriended the boy's parents to gain their trust, allowing him unsupervised access. He ran a film club in his maisonette for children in the estate, using this position to perpetrate the abuse multiple times during summer holidays. Smith claimed he was 'teaching' the boy about sex, insisting it was 'their secret' and that no one would believe the child if he spoke out.

The judge at Guildford Crown Court ruled that Smith had 'caused him grave, permanent and serious psychological harm and impacted greatly on his life', labelling it 'sick sexual abuse'. Smith denied seven charges but was found guilty by a jury. This conviction follows similar offences in the 1970s and 1990s, indicating a pattern of predatory behaviour targeting children.

One victim reported attempting suicide multiple times as a result of the trauma. Sentenced to eight years' imprisonment, of which he must serve two-thirds, the term was reduced from a starting point of 12 years due to Smith's deteriorating health and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on prison conditions. He was ordered to pay £3,250 in compensation to victims and a £149 victim surcharge.

The case, prosecuted in 2020, brings attention to the long-term effects of child sexual abuse and the importance of historical prosecutions in delivering justice.
