Full Description

A former teacher at Hethersett Academy has admitted to serious sexual offences against a pupil, prompting the school to inform parents of the distressing developments. Simon Taylor, aged 43 and previously an army sergeant, pleaded guilty to multiple charges at the start of what was intended to be his trial.

The offences, which took place between August 2019 and January 2022, involved Taylor preying on a 15-year-old girl while he was employed at the academy. He had initially denied eight allegations but ultimately admitted to five charges, including sexual activity with a child while in a position of trust as a teacher at an educational establishment. Additionally, Taylor confessed to two counts of sexual assault involving intentional touching and two counts of sexual communication with a child. Specific incidents included touching the girl's breasts in his car, kissing her in the woods, and touching under her school skirt.

Taylor, formerly of Dereham, provided an address in Marston Jabbett near Bedworth in Warwickshire during court proceedings. Following his guilty pleas, he was placed on the sex offenders' register. Sentencing is scheduled for 12 January, though the exact details of the sentence have not yet been determined.

In response to the court appearance, Hethersett Academy, part of the Inspiration Trust, sent a letter to parents. Headteacher Jane Diver expressed the school's commitment to safeguarding, stating: 'I am writing to inform you of a serious matter involving a former member of staff at Hethersett Academy. We understand this news is deeply distressing and recognise the emotional impact this may have on our school community. Safeguarding and protection of children and young people remain our highest priority.' She further assured parents that 'All staff continue to undergo rigorous safeguarding checks, support and training. Please be assured that the school has cooperated fully with the authorities throughout the investigation. We remain committed to transparency, accountability and the safety of every child in our care.'

The academy is offering support to affected members of the community and has provided an email contact for concerned parents. This case underscores the importance of vigilance in educational settings, with the school emphasising its ongoing efforts to ensure pupil safety.
