Offence Summary

Perverted priest David Taylor carried out sex attacks on a boy in a church and on Holy Island in the 1980s, betraying trust and leading to his 13-year jail term.

Full Description

David Taylor, a former priest from Angel Lane, Alnwick, Northumberland, was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment at Newcastle Crown Court for ten offences of indecency with a child and indecent assault committed in the 1980s. Taylor grossly abused his position of trust within the church, attacking a young boy on multiple occasions, including forcing him under his gown to perform a sex act and assaults on Holy Island.

The victim endured the abuse in silence for four decades, fearing disbelief due to Taylor's revered status. Justice was finally served after Taylor's conviction, following previous sentences: 30 months in 2009 for five similar offences against boys, and a suspended sentence in 2017 for another indecent assault.

Newcastle Crown Court heard victim impact statements detailing the profound betrayal and lifelong trauma. Judge Julie Clemitson imposed the 13-year term, despite Taylor's continued protests of innocence as noted by his defence, Lorraine Mustard. Northumbria Police's historical abuse investigation unit was instrumental in prosecuting this long-standing case.

The sentencing emphasises the accountability of authority figures in sexual abuse cases, providing closure to the victim and reinforcing safeguards against clerical exploitation.
