Offence Summary

Dean Juric, a former headteacher, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent photographs of children and one count of distributing indecent photographs of a child at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court.

Full Description

A former headteacher from the North East of England, Dean Juric, has pleaded guilty to serious charges involving indecent images of children. Juric, aged 54 and residing in the North Tyneside area, appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court on 21 November 2024, where he admitted to three counts of making indecent photographs of children and one count of distributing indecent photographs of a child.

Juric was previously the headteacher at St Robert of Newminster Catholic School in Washington, a position he held until his sudden departure in January 2024. The Northern Echo first reported on his exit at that time, which was later confirmed to be linked to a police investigation. In a letter to parents dated 20 November 2024, Lucie Stephensen, acting chief executive officer of the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust, stated that 'the absence was linked to a police investigation'. The trust, which oversees the school, emphasised that the allegations do not relate to any school or individual within the trust.

Following his guilty plea, Juric was released on unconditional bail. He is scheduled to be sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court on 22 December 2024. A spokesperson for the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust provided further context in a statement to the Northern Echo: 'In January 2024, Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust was informed by the police that a headteacher from a Trust school was subject to a police investigation. The Trust took immediate action by suspending the headteacher and appointing an executive headteacher to support the school’s leadership.' The spokesperson added, 'We understand that the allegations do not relate to any school or individual in Bishop Wilkinson Trust. The Trust no longer employs the headteacher. The case remains active and is subject to judicial proceedings. Our priority is to ensure all pupils and families feel safe, supported, and informed. Support is being provided to the school community. Our leaders and staff continue to prioritise the education and wellbeing of the children.'

The investigation into Juric's activities was handled by Northumbria Police, the force covering the North East region. No details have been released regarding the specific timeframe of the offences or the sources of the indecent images, as the case is ongoing pending sentencing.
