Full Description

A man from Mansfield has been imprisoned following a horrific sexual assault on a young woman in Derbyshire. Joshua Downing, aged 21, of Barton Court, raped the victim while she was asleep at an address in Derby. The incident, which left the woman deeply traumatised, came to light the following morning when she awoke in pain and experienced distressing flashbacks of the attack as she drifted in and out of sleep.

Derbyshire Police investigated the matter promptly, arresting Downing shortly after the rape occurred. Initially, he denied the charges, but during a hearing at Derby Crown Court on 29 January 2026, he admitted to one count of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of assault by penetration. The court proceedings highlighted the severity of his actions, with the victim struggling to function normally in the aftermath.

On 15 March 2026, at the same court, Judge [Name not specified] sentenced Downing to eight years and two months' imprisonment. In addition to the custodial sentence, he was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely and was issued a restraining order in respect of the victim, also lasting indefinitely. These measures aim to protect the public and prevent future offences.

Detective Constable Ellen Sanders, the lead officer in the case from Derbyshire Police, commented on the victim's courage: 'The victim in the case has been deeply traumatised by Downing’s actions and has struggled to function normally since the rape happened. It has been a long road for her, and I want to thank her for her courage, during our investigation and the court process. While it can’t take away the emotional anguish, I hope that seeing Downing sentenced and held accountable for his offences will allow her the strength to move forward.' The case was reported by the Derbyshire Times on 16 April 2026, underscoring the ongoing commitment to justice in sexual offence cases within the region.
