Offence Summary

Cristian Urlateanu was convicted of nine charges including rape, assault, living off prostitution earnings, and supplying cocaine, involving the joint rape of a woman with co-accused and exploiting vulnerable females in Dundee brothels.

Full Description

Cristian Urlateanu, a 41-year-old Romanian national, was part of a notorious gang that exploited vulnerable women through human trafficking and sexual offences in Dundee brothels. Convicted alongside four others following a January 2025 trial at the High Court in Glasgow, Urlateanu faced nine charges stemming from a 2021 Police Scotland investigation into traffickers in the Tayside region. The six-week trial featured evidence from 10 victims, exposing the gang's use of drugs to control and coerce women into prostitution.

Urlateanu, who lived with his partner and co-accused Alexandra Bugonea at the time, was found guilty of raping the same woman on multiple occasions alongside Bugonea at a flat on Bright Street. His offences also included assault, living off the earnings of prostitution, and supplying cocaine to victims. After his initial arrest, Urlateanu fled to Belgium but was located and extradited back to Scotland to face justice. The gang's operations centred on properties in Dundee, including Bright Street, Gellatly Street, and Perth Road, where women were subjected to ruthless exploitation.

  • Urlateanu participated in the gang rape of at least one woman with other members.
  • He received 18 years in custody, followed by a two-year supervision period.
  • Like his co-accused, he was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

Procurator Fiscal Fiona Kirkby remarked on the gang's lack of regard for the victims' suffering: 'These were truly reprehensible crimes, and the victims must be commended for their courage in speaking out.' The prosecution's efforts, supported by charity organisations and justice partners, ensured the women's voices were heard through a trauma-informed process. Detective Chief Inspector Scott Carswell highlighted Police Scotland's resolve: 'Police Scotland will continue to target criminals who abuse, control and exploit people, working with partners nationally and internationally.'

This case illustrates the challenges in combating cross-border trafficking, with Urlateanu's flight abroad failing to evade capture. The severe sentences aim to prevent further harm and provide closure to the affected women.
