Offence Summary

Michael James, a registered sex offender, was jailed for 40 weeks after sending a racially aggravated threatening message to a BBC Radio Nottingham presenter and breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order by deleting WhatsApp messages from his phone without permission.

Full Description

Michael James, a 57-year-old prolific sex offender from Nottingham, has been returned to prison following a series of breaches of his strict court-imposed conditions. James, who has a long history of convictions for sexual offences including those against children dating back to 1993, was subject to multiple Sexual Harm Prevention Orders designed to protect the public from his harmful behaviour.

In April 2021, James was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for sending an explicit video of a sex act to his probation officer and committing an act outraging public decency at a bus stop in Nottingham. Upon his release, he was placed under a comprehensive Sexual Harm Prevention Order with 11 stringent conditions, one of which explicitly prohibited him from deleting any electronic messages from his communication devices without prior permission from a representative of the Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police.

On 21 November 2025, Nottinghamshire Police officers responded to a report that James had sent a threatening and offensive message to BBC Radio Nottingham. The communication was racially aggravated and targeted one of the station's presenters, prompting immediate concern for public safety. Upon arresting James at his home and taking him into custody, police conducted checks on his device and discovered that he had deleted several WhatsApp messages related to the incident, in direct violation of his prevention order.

James, residing at Frobisher Gardens in Daybrook, Nottingham, was charged with sending a communication threatening death or serious harm and breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. He appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on 17 February 2026, where he pleaded guilty to both offences. The court sentenced him to 40 weeks' imprisonment, reinforcing the seriousness with which the judicial system views such violations.

Sergeant Elizabeth Williams of Nottinghamshire Police commented on the case, stating: “James has an appalling criminal record and had multiple spells behind bars. As a result, he is on the sex offenders register for life and made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which are designed to protect the public from individuals like James.” She further emphasised the enforceability of these orders, adding: “As he has just found out to his cost, these orders have real teeth, and the courts take a very dim view of those who flout them in any way. The judicial system has also made it clear that the right to freedom of expression does not extend to sending grossly offensive and threatening messages and the abuse James subjected the presenter to was simply unacceptable.” This incident underscores the ongoing monitoring required for registered sex offenders and the robust measures in place to prevent further harm.
