Offence Summary

Charles Stevens was sentenced to 10 years in prison for multiple child sex offences committed against two vulnerable young children between 1975 and 1986.

Full Description

Charles Stevens, a 72-year-old man formerly residing in Maidstone, Kent, was convicted at Maidstone Crown Court of multiple child sex offences following an eight-day trial. The offences, which involved the repeated sexual abuse of two vulnerable young children, occurred between 1975 and 1986. Stevens, who now lives at Hawkers Cove in Padstow, Cornwall, denied all charges but was found guilty by the jury.

The case came to light in 2017 when a woman approached Kent Police with allegations of historical sexual abuse by Stevens. A second woman later came forward that year, providing further details of the non-recent offences against the two children. Stevens was arrested on 17 March 2017 and subsequently charged. The victims, traumatised for many years by the abuse, demonstrated remarkable bravery in reporting their ordeals and assisting the investigation, as commended by the authorities.

On Friday, 18 May 2018, Stevens was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment with an extended licence period of 10 years. Additionally, he was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life. Investigating officer Detective Constable Samuel Trevena stated: 'Stevens repeatedly abused two vulnerable young children who have been traumatised for many years. I would particularly like to commend the victims for their bravery in coming forwards to report their ordeal and assisting the investigation. I hope the conclusion of this case and the sentence passed may provide some closure for them.' Trevena also encouraged other victims of sexual abuse, regardless of when it occurred, to contact Kent Police, assuring full support and sensitive handling of investigations.

The conviction underscores the commitment of Kent Police to pursuing historical sex offences, ensuring that perpetrators face justice even decades after the crimes. This case highlights the long-lasting impact of child sexual abuse and the importance of victim testimonies in securing convictions.
