Offence Summary

Mason Maxwell was jailed for repeatedly failing to notify police of his foreign travel intentions, in violation of requirements imposed following his 2015 conviction for inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

Full Description

Mason Maxwell, a convicted paedophile, has been imprisoned for breaching foreign travel notification requirements that were put in place after his earlier child abuse conviction. The 32-year-old from HMP Forest Bank appeared at Manchester Crown Court, where he was found guilty of four counts of failing to comply with these obligations between September and December 2021.

The court heard that Maxwell's restrictions stemmed from a March 2015 conviction on two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. As part of his sentence for that offence, he was required to inform officers at least seven days in advance of any planned travel abroad. Despite this, Maxwell failed to register his intentions on 3 September 2021, 24 September 2021, 4 November 2021, and 1 December 2021, prompting an investigation by Greater Manchester Police.

Maxwell was arrested on Clowes Street in Salford on 6 January 2022 in connection with these breaches. He was also sentenced for violating a suspended sentence order, an matter investigated by West Yorkshire Police. In a statement, Greater Manchester Police confirmed: 'Mason Maxwell (16/07/1989), of HMP Forest Bank, was yesterday (Wednesday 16 March) jailed at Manchester Crown Square Crown Court after being found guilty of failing to comply with notification requirements. Maxwell was sentenced to one year and four months imprisonment.' The force further detailed the specific dates of the offences and emphasised the importance of the notification conditions following his prior conviction.

This case underscores the ongoing monitoring of sex offenders in the UK, with notification requirements designed to protect the public by tracking international movements. Maxwell's repeated violations highlight the challenges in ensuring compliance among those with prior sexual offence convictions. The sentencing took place on 16 March 2022, reflecting the judicial system's commitment to enforcing protective measures.
