Offence Summary

Louise Smith was sentenced to 11 years in prison for assisting Gavin Sloan in child sexual offences, including sexual activity in the presence of a child and causing a child to commit a sexual act.

Full Description

Louise Smith, aged 42 and formerly of Cheshire, has been sentenced to 11 years' imprisonment for her role in assisting Gavin Sloan in a series of child sexual offences. Smith was charged with 12 counts of sexual activity in the presence of a child and causing a child to commit a sexual act, as part of a broader investigation into Sloan's abusive activities spanning from 2013 to 2021.

The case came to light in May 2021 when West Mercia Police raided Sloan's home in Minsterley near Shrewsbury, uncovering extensive indecent images and videos, including evidence of Sloan's direct assaults on children. This evidence trail led to Smith's arrest and subsequent charges, revealing her complicity in facilitating and participating in the exploitation of young victims. Smith's actions were integral to the offences, enabling the abuse to occur in her presence and coercing children into sexual acts.

Alongside Sloan and another accomplice, Jenna Ball, Smith was sentenced on 12 May 2022 at Shrewsbury Crown Court following guilty pleas. The court heard details of how Smith supported Sloan's predatory behaviour, contributing to the profound harm inflicted on vulnerable children. Detective Inspector Jo Delahay commended the sentencing, noting, 'We also welcome the sentences handed to Ball and Smith for their part in assisting Sloan.' This outcome reflects the severity with which the judiciary views those who aid in child sexual exploitation.

West Mercia Police's investigation highlighted the interconnected nature of the crimes, with Smith's involvement underscoring the need for comprehensive probes into such networks. The force's efforts ensured that all perpetrators faced justice, providing a degree of closure for the affected families. The case serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers posed by those who enable paedophilic activities within communities.
