Offence Summary

Full Description

A dangerous rapist, Daniel Owen Mercer, has been jailed for a total of 17 years following a brutal sexual assault in Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire. The 39-year-old offender, who has no fixed address, was found guilty by a jury at Preston Crown Court of raping a woman in a harrowing incident that left his victim screaming and crying in distress.

The attack took place in Clayton-le-Moors, a quiet town in Lancashire, where Mercer subjected the woman to a violent rape. Court proceedings revealed the profound trauma inflicted on the victim, who demonstrated remarkable courage by coming forward and providing evidence during the trial. Judge at Preston Crown Court sentenced Mercer to 14 years of immediate custody, extended by an additional three years on licence, recognising him as a dangerous offender. Furthermore, he was ordered to sign the Sex Offender Register for life, ensuring long-term monitoring of his activities.

Detective Sergeant Mark Parrington from East CID, part of Lancashire Police, described the investigation as long and complex but ultimately successful in bringing the perpetrator to justice. In a statement, he said: "This was a long and complex investigation which ultimately resulted in a dangerous individual being brought to justice. The impact of his appalling behaviour has had a profound impact on the victim. She has shown incredible strength first of all in coming forward and then giving evidence during the trial. I would like to place on record my thanks and admiration." Parrington emphasised the importance of the case, hoping it would encourage other victims of sexual offences to report their experiences, assuring them that authorities would listen and act decisively.

The sentencing occurred on 16 August 2024, as reported by the Lancashire Evening Post. Lancashire Police played a pivotal role in the investigation, gathering evidence that led to Mercer's conviction. This case underscores the ongoing efforts to combat sexual violence in the region, with the judiciary and police working together to protect the public from dangerous individuals like Mercer.
