Full Description

David Alexander Murphy, a 40-year-old registered sex offender from Derby, has been imprisoned for 12 years and eight months following his conviction for grooming and sexually assaulting an 11-year-old boy. The incident occurred in June 2021 when Murphy drove to a village in Suffolk to meet the child he had targeted online.

According to the National Crime Agency (NCA), Murphy's actions were premeditated and involved offering the boy money to facilitate an in-person meeting. He pleaded guilty at Derby Crown Court to inciting a boy under 13 to engage in sexual activity, meeting a boy under 16 following sexual grooming, three counts of breaching a sexual harm prevention order, and three counts of failing to comply with the sex offenders' register requirements. These breaches stemmed from prior offences committed in 2012 and 2017, which had resulted in the imposition of sexual harm prevention orders restricting his unsupervised contact with children and requiring disclosure of devices capable of storing data.

Detectives uncovered evidence during their investigation, including a passport and bank card in the alias 'McClean', as well as two SIM cards hidden in an Oxo cube box. The boy provided a crucial description to officers, recalling that Murphy arrived in a car with a logo on the side, which was traced to a car club Murphy belonged to in Derby. NCA operations manager Danielle Pownall described Murphy's behaviour as 'premeditated and devious', praising the victim's bravery in assisting the investigation: 'David Murphy took his time to groom a vulnerable child online and even offered money to meet him in person. I would like to thank the young boy abused by Murphy for his bravery in speaking to us and helping to put a dangerous criminal behind bars.'

The sentencing at Derby Crown Court underscores the ongoing risks posed by repeat offenders who violate protective measures. The NCA's involvement highlights the collaborative efforts to combat child sexual exploitation, ensuring that individuals like Murphy, who exploit vulnerabilities online, face severe consequences.
