Full Description

A former teacher from Carnforth, Lancashire, has been sentenced for historic sexual abuse committed against a young female student during the 1990s. Mark Baker, aged 53, of Haws Hill, Carnforth, appeared at Worcester Crown Court where he received a community order for 24 months after pleading guilty to two counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 16.

The offences occurred when Baker was in his 20s and working as a teacher at The River School in Worcester. He formed an inappropriate relationship with a female student who was approximately 12 years old at the time. According to details from the court, Baker abused his position of trust to groom the young girl before sexually abusing her. The abuse was first reported to police in July 2024, prompting an investigation by Worcester’s Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) team.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge [name not specified in article] imposed a community order requiring Baker to complete 50 rehabilitation activity days and 180 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders' register for five years and ordered to pay court costs. This outcome reflects the court's recognition of the seriousness of the historic offences while opting for a non-custodial sentence.

  • Baker's guilty plea was entered prior to the hearing, following the PVP team's investigation.
  • The victim, now an adult, demonstrated significant bravery in coming forward, as highlighted by the authorities.

Detective Sergeant Kirsty Hickling of the PVP team commented: “Baker abused his position of trust to groom a young girl and went onto sexually abuse her. No child should ever feel unsafe or experience harm at the hands of someone who is supposed to care for them and is in a position of trust. I commend the victim in this case for her bravery of coming forward.” She further emphasised: “I hope this investigation shows people that we take all reports of sexual abuse seriously, no matter how long ago it happened. They deserve the chance to be heard and have their case brought before the court.”

The case was reported by the Lancaster Guardian on 22 October 2025, underscoring the ongoing commitment to addressing non-recent sexual abuse. Baker's actions highlight the vulnerabilities in educational settings and the importance of safeguarding measures for children.
