Offence Summary

Gene Neville Wright was convicted of raping a woman and sexually assaulting four girls over a 15-year period between 1996 and 2011. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison at York Crown Court.

Full Description

Gene Neville Wright, a 40-year-old man from York, was jailed for 18 years following his conviction for a series of historical sexual offences committed against a woman and four girls. The abuse spanned a 15-year period from 1996 to 2011, as detailed by North Yorkshire Police in their statement following the sentencing.

Wright denied all charges but was found guilty earlier in the year of rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault at York Crown Court. The court heard victim impact statements that underscored the profound and lasting damage caused by his actions. One victim stated that Wright had 'not only ruined my life, but he's ruined my family's lives'. Another described how the attacks meant she had 'missed out on a proper childhood', affecting her 'understanding of what a loving relationship should look like'. A third victim spoke of the 'ongoing emotional and psychological impact of Wright's actions', while a fourth said she was 'too frightened to be alone'. The fifth victim explained that she suffered from regular and 'debilitating' panic attacks as a result of the abuse.

The crimes came to light in 2019 when one of the victims disclosed the abuse to child mental health support staff. Following Wright's arrest, further victims were identified and provided their accounts to officers. Detective Constable Sarah Scott of North Yorkshire Police described the crimes as 'horrific', noting that 'he raped the woman and stole the girls' childhoods, while continuing to live his own life without consequence'. She added that throughout the investigation and trial, Wright 'denied every offence and accused all five victims of lying'. DC Scott expressed hope that the sentence would encourage other survivors of abuse to come forward.

In addition to the 18-year custodial sentence handed down on Monday at York Crown Court, Wright was placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely and received a life-long sexual harm prevention order. The case was prosecuted under the jurisdiction of HM Courts & Tribunals Service, with North Yorkshire Police leading the investigation.
