Offence Summary

Lewis James Taylor sexually abused a child, photographed the abuse, and shared the indecent images with another paedophile via messaging services.

Full Description

Lewis James Taylor, a 31-year-old man from Ely in Cardiff, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court for committing serious sexual offences against a vulnerable child. The abuse occurred in April 2021, during which Taylor intentionally touched a child under the age of 13 in a sexual manner. He captured photographs of the abuse and distributed them to another individual with similar paedophilic interests through the Kik messaging service.

Prosecutor Matthew Cobbe detailed how Taylor exchanged messages discussing his intentions to abuse the child, describing the communications as explicit and disturbing. The shared images depicted the child's genital area and acts of male ejaculation, highlighting the severity of the exploitation. Taylor later engaged in further conversations with another user, indicating plans for additional abuse by responding 'soon' to inquiries about when he would offend again.

The investigation began when police officers in London uncovered the illicit content being sent to a user in their jurisdiction, leading them to Taylor's location. South Wales Police searched his home, where he initially denied any wrongdoing, stating 'I haven't done anything'. Authorities discovered 12 images involving bestiality and a video recording the abuse itself. A victim personal statement from the child's mother was read in court, expressing profound impacts on her trust, sleep, and mental health, including nightmares, anxiety, and the need for antidepressants. She now restricts the child's care to immediate family only.

Defence barrister Ruth Smith described the case as unusual, noting Taylor's remorse and the personal losses he faced, including employment, accommodation, and respect from others. However, Her Honour Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke expressed doubts about his remorse, stating he demonstrated a strong sexual interest in very young children and posed a huge risk. Taylor pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault on a child under 13, making and distributing indecent images of a child, and possessing extreme pornographic images.

  • The court heard the abuse targeted a particularly vulnerable child.
  • Messages revealed Taylor's intent and discussions with a 'like-minded paedophile'.
  • Extended licence and sexual harm prevention order were imposed post-sentencing.
