A man from West Sussex has been sentenced to over 12 years in prison for the rape and sexual assault of a nine-year-old boy. Steven Smith, aged 28 and residing on Lower Street in Pulborough, committed the offences in June 2022. The abuse was reported to social services, prompting an investigation by specialist officers who supported the victim and his family throughout the process.
Smith had a prior conviction for child sex offences in 2017, which resulted in him being subject to a sexual harm prevention order. This order explicitly prohibited him from having any contact with male children under the age of 18. Despite this, Smith abused the boy, who was known to him through family connections. He was arrested and charged with rape of a boy under 13, attempted rape of a boy under 13, sexual assault by touching of a boy under 13, and breach of the sexual harm prevention order.
Initially, Smith pleaded not guilty to all charges. However, on 21 August 2024, at Lewes Crown Court, he admitted to breaching the sexual harm prevention order. Following a trial, he was convicted of the remaining sexual offences. Sentencing occurred on 3 November 2024 at the same court, where Judge [Name not specified] imposed a custodial sentence of 12 years and nine months. In addition, Smith was made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will remain on the sex offenders register for life.
Offences: Rape of a boy under 13, attempted rape of a boy under 13, sexual assault by touching of a boy under 13, breach of SHPO Court: Lewes Crown Court Date of abuse: June 2022 Prior conviction: Child sex offences in 2017 Detective Inspector Harry Doyle of Sussex Police commented on the case, stating: "The child involved has shown immense bravery in coming forward to report this horrific abuse. Their courage, and the support shown by their family, have been vital throughout this process, which I know has been extremely challenging. Smith’s actions were appalling and represent a profound breach of trust. Such crimes cause lasting harm and have no place in our society. He will now spend a significant period behind bars, where he can no longer pose any threat to children or the wider public." The investigation was handled by Sussex Police, who emphasised their commitment to taking all reports of abuse seriously.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable children from sexual exploitation, particularly by individuals with known histories of offending. The article was reported by Lucy Hunt for The Argus, based on court proceedings and police statements.
