Offence Summary

Mohamed Jama, alias 'Magic', admitted supplying cannabis as part of a drug-dealing gang involved in child sexual exploitation in Bristol.

Full Description

Mohamed Jama, 20, known as 'Magic', was convicted for his role in the drug supply arm of a 13-strong Somali gang that sexually exploited vulnerable Bristol teenagers aged 13-17 from 2011. While not directly charged with sex offences, his activities supported the prostitution ring.

In the first trial at Bristol Crown Court, Jama admitted supplying cannabis alongside Said Zakaria. The gang used drugs to groom and control girls, whose flats became bases for dealing and abuse. Avon and Somerset Police's Operation Brooke linked drug crimes to the exploitation.

  • Jama's supply facilitated the environment where girls were traded for sex in exchange for narcotics.
  • The operation involved multiple victims, with evidence from raids finding girls in distress.

Sentenced to 18 months on 27 November 2014, Jama's lighter term reflected drug-focused charges, but the case exposed the intertwined crimes. Anna Vigars outlined the broader abuse. The convictions followed 32 hours of jury deliberation in the second trial.

This element of the scandal highlighted drug-sex trade links, prompting reviews and community statements against such crimes.
