Offence Summary

Sebastian Maier, a Romanian national from St Austell, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for raping and sexually assaulting a woman in south east Cornwall in September 2025.

Full Description

Sebastian Maier, a 50-year-old Romanian national residing in St Austell, Cornwall, was convicted at Truro Crown Court for a brutal sexual attack that occurred in September 2025 in south east Cornwall.

The incident involved Maier raping and sexually assaulting his victim, leaving her profoundly traumatised. In her victim impact statement, she described the devastating effects: 'I was a confident woman before. I'm the shadow of my former self.' She further revealed feeling low with dark thoughts and no longer wanting to live after the terror inflicted upon her. The court heard that Maier had been living in the UK for 14 years, working as a kitchen porter, but this was overshadowed by his criminal history in Romania, which included convictions for aggravated larceny, family abandonment, and non-payment of child maintenance.

During the trial last month, Maier was found guilty of one count of rape and sexual assault but not guilty of another count of rape. His Honour Judge James Adkin, presiding over the case, remarked that Maier's hard work 'counts for little in the face of such serious sexual depravity.' The sentencing took place at Truro Crown Court, where Maier received an 11-year custodial sentence. He will serve two-thirds of his term before being deported back to Romania upon release.

The case was investigated by Devon and Cornwall Police, highlighting the severity of sexual offences in the region. This conviction underscores the judicial system's response to violent sexual crimes, ensuring perpetrators face significant consequences.
