Offence Summary

Robin Croft was convicted of multiple child sexual offences, including sexual activity with a child and causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment.

Full Description

A 61-year-old man from Suffolk has been imprisoned for 12 years following his conviction on 11 counts of child sexual offences at Ipswich Crown Court.

Robin Croft, residing at Marigold Drive in Red Lodge, stood trial at Ipswich Crown Court in December 2019. On 13 December 2019, a jury found him guilty of 11 out of 13 charges, which comprised five offences of sexual activity with a child and six offences of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. He was acquitted on one count of sexual activity with a child, while another similar charge was left on file.

Croft appeared for sentencing on 8 January 2020 before the same court, where Judge Michael Cole imposed a 12-year custodial sentence. Additionally, Croft was ordered to sign the sex offenders' register indefinitely, reflecting the severity of his crimes.

Detective Constable Bev Culloden, who led the investigation for Suffolk Constabulary, described the offences as horrific. In a statement following the sentencing, she said: 'These were horrific offences against a young vulnerable boy who was groomed and sexually assaulted by Croft. He abused his trust to carry out these multiple offences and no child should be subjected to such abuse.' Culloden also praised the victim's courage, noting: 'I would also like to pay tribute to the victim who had the courage to come forward and his family for their help in supporting the investigation and hope that the court result will bring some kind of closure and allow them to move forward positively in their lives.'

The case highlights the ongoing efforts by Suffolk Constabulary to protect vulnerable children from sexual exploitation and abuse. Croft's actions involved grooming and assaulting a young boy, breaching the trust placed in him as an adult figure.
