Offence Summary

Jason Jones groomed and manipulated a vulnerable teenage girl into engaging in sexual activity on multiple occasions. He was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court.

Full Description

Jason Jones, a 31-year-old man from St Helens, was jailed for grooming and sexually exploiting a vulnerable teenage girl. The offences occurred when Jones was in his 20s and involved a series of manipulative interactions that led to repeated sexual activity with the victim in Warrington.

The case came to light after the victim reported the matters to Cheshire Police. Jones had initiated contact with the teenager online, messaging her that she 'needed him' and gradually building a false sense of emotional dependency. Their meetings began innocently with cuddling and tickling but quickly escalated to kissing and more intimate sexual behaviour. Further encounters took place in his car and a local park in Warrington, where sexual intercourse occurred a large number of times, though the victim could not recall the exact count. Jones made inappropriate comments about her wearing her school uniform during meetings, which she refused.

The victim, who believed she was in love with Jones, initially hesitated to report him, fearing it would ruin his life—a sentiment Jones himself reinforced by telling her the same. It was only later, upon realising the manipulation, that she confronted him. In response, Jones expressed suicidal thoughts. Upon arrest, he provided 'no comment' answers during police questioning.

At Liverpool Crown Court, prosecutor Tom McLoughlin described Jones's actions as classic grooming behaviour, abusing the victim's trust and exploiting the significant age disparity. The court heard an impact statement from the victim, who said: 'What happened has altered my life forever. Years of my childhood were taken away from me, and he has stripped any sense of life away from me. He manipulated me into thinking what was happening was normal. He manipulated me into thinking that I was in love with him.' She added that the trauma had left her feeling like her body was no longer her own and haunted by unforgettable images.

In defence, Jeremy Rawson highlighted Jones's lack of previous convictions, his guilty pleas, remorse, steady employment, and supportive family. However, Judge Robert Trevor-Jones condemned the gradual grooming of the young, immature, and vulnerable girl, noting that Jones had persisted in committing serious sexual acts over an extended period. The judge remarked: 'She came to believe that she was in love with you, and she did not report it as she said it would ruin your life. She was right of course, but that kept her on board. Although you do express remorse, you minimised your motivations involved, and in your pre-sentence report, you described what you did as honourable.'

The sentencing took place on a Friday at Liverpool Crown Court, as reported by the St Helens Star. Jones, residing on Prescot Road in St Helens, received a custodial sentence of seven-and-a-half years, of which he must serve at least two-thirds before potential release on licence by the Parole Board. Additional measures included lifelong registration on the sex offender register, an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, and a 10-year restraining order protecting the victim.
