A 46-year-old man from Lancashire has been sentenced to five years in prison for child sex offences following an elaborate online sting operation by South Yorkshire Police.
Jared Lamb, of Brookwood Way in Chorley, engaged in disturbing online conversations with individuals he believed were fellow sexual predators. In the days leading up to his arrest on 20 July 2023, Lamb arranged to travel to Sheffield to meet a man he thought was the father of a five-year-old girl, with the explicit intention of abusing the child. Unbeknownst to Lamb, he was actually communicating with specialist officers from the Internet Safeguarding and Operations Team (ISOT) of South Yorkshire Police, who posed as the predatory father to lure him into the trap.
Upon arriving in South Yorkshire as planned, Lamb was arrested by police. He was subsequently charged with two counts of attempting to arrange or facilitate the commission of a child sex offence, as well as three counts of distributing an indecent photograph or pseudo-photograph of a child. These charges stemmed directly from his online activities and the materials he shared during the communications.
Lamb admitted to all charges at Sheffield Crown Court on 21 August 2024. On 1 November 2024, he was sentenced to five years' imprisonment, followed by six years on extended licence. Additionally, he was handed a sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future behaviour and protect the public.
Detective Constable Kayleigh Banks of South Yorkshire Police commented on the case, stating: “Online chat platforms and sites are often where disturbing crimes like Lamb’s begin, and it is the work of ISOT to ensure that sex offenders are caught and brought to justice before a child comes to harm. Their work is naturally carried out behind the scenes but plays a vital role in keeping dangerous predators like Lamb off the streets of South Yorkshire.” She further emphasised the police commitment, adding: “The likes of Lamb, who prey on vulnerable people, believe that they will not be caught because they operate online. However, this is not the case and our highly skilled ISOT officers are committed to rooting out this depraved form of criminality. I am pleased to see that Lamb will have five years behind bars to contemplate his crimes. This result sends a message that predators are not safe hiding behind computer screens, and our dedicated officers will find them.”
The case, reported by Hits Radio South Yorkshire on 1 November 2024, highlights the proactive measures taken by law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and prevent real harm to children.
