Full Description

A 54-year-old man from Risca, South Wales, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court for possessing and distributing indecent images of children, including horrific depictions of child rape.

Nicholas Froom, residing at Eppynt Close in Trenewydd Park, was arrested in June following a tip-off from the National Crime Agency to Gwent Police. Officers raided his home and discovered child abuse material on his phone. Prosecuting barrister Sol Hartley informed the court that Froom admitted to being sexually attracted to 15-year-old children but not to babies, claiming he was not a threat to children and expressing disgust with himself.

The images Froom shared with fellow paedophiles included a particularly disturbing category A image of a three-year-old child being raped. In total, detectives found 37 category A images—the most serious classification—12 category B images, and 11 category C images stored on his device. Hartley noted that the category A images depicted victims in discernible pain and distress.

Froom pleaded guilty to distributing category A and C indecent images of children, as well as making category A, B, and C indecent images of children. Representing him, William Bebb highlighted Froom's genuine remorse and lack of previous convictions, stating that he had been working with a charity for rehabilitation and showed a real commitment to change.

Judge Eugene Egan described Froom as 'warped' but acknowledged his full and frank admissions upon arrest and early guilty pleas, which influenced the sentencing. Calling it a 'real knife-edge case,' the judge imposed a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years. Froom was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work, a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement, and a four-month electronically monitored curfew from 8pm to 6am. Additionally, he must register as a sex offender for 10 years, be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same period, pay a victim surcharge, and cover £150 in prosecution costs.

The case was reported by the South Wales Argus, with coverage by senior multimedia reporter Iwan Gabe Davies.
