Full Description

Paul Dowsing, a 61-year-old man from Creswell Road, Clowne in Derbyshire, was convicted of repeatedly raping a child over a three-year period. The offences came to light following a courageous report from the victim, leading to an investigation by South Yorkshire Police.

The case proceeded to a five-day trial at Sheffield Crown Court, where the jury saw through Dowsing's attempts at deception. On 1 February 2026, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison. In addition to the custodial sentence, Dowsing received a restraining order and a 20-year sexual harm prevention order to protect the public from further harm.

Investigating officer Simone Stacey from the Rotherham Protecting Vulnerable People Team commended the victim's extraordinary courage in a statement released by South Yorkshire Police. She stated: "The courage this victim has shown is extraordinary. Coming forward to report such a traumatic crime takes immense strength, and throughout the entire investigation she has displayed resilience that commands deep respect." Stacey further highlighted the victim's determination: "Her determination to speak the truth after such a prolonged period of abuse has been vital in securing justice."

Police officers praised both the young girl's bravery and the jury's discernment in ensuring Dowsing's accountability. The victim, who is granted lifelong anonymity under the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act, demonstrated incredible resilience throughout the process, enabling authorities to hold the offender responsible for his vile actions.
