Gareth Russell, a 22-year-old former shop worker from Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow of a series of grave sexual offences against underage girls. The court heard how Russell, described as a serial sex predator, engaged in an 'industrial level of grooming' targeting at least 15 named young females, as well as communicating indecently with unknown underage girls, between 2021 and 2023.
Russell preyed on his victims primarily through social media platforms including Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and text messages, often using fake names such as 'Freddie' to deceive them. He blackmailed the youngsters by threatening to post intimate photos he had obtained online, coercing them into compliance. Despite being subject to four bail orders prohibiting contact with children, Russell continued his predatory behaviour, culminating in the rape of a 13-year-old girl in woods near his Fort William home in September 2023. The victim had been threatened with the exposure of her photos, leading her to meet him late at night.
During the trial, Russell admitted to being a sex offender but denied any physical abuse, claiming threats from the local community made him too scared to leave his home. He insisted he did not rape the 13-year-old and recounted incidents such as molesting a 16-year-old girl on a bus and attempting to prey on another in a car, both of which he disputed. Jurors rejected his defences and convicted him on a total of 40 charges, including rape, sexual assault, and extensive online grooming.
Russell targeted victims on multiple apps, initially contacting one young woman via OnlyFans. He was arrested while logged into Snapchat under a bogus name. His actions gained him a notorious reputation in Fort William, prompting his family to install CCTV outside their home for protection. Prosecutor Nicola Gilchrist cross-examined Russell harshly, stating: 'The truth of the matter is, on your own evidence, you are a creep, a weirdo. Over the course of two years, you engaged in a campaign of an industrial level of grooming. You groomed children while you were on four bail orders for such behaviour.' Russell's own defence counsel, KC Gary Allan, described the admitted charges as 'undeniably disgusting' and 'frankly despicable conduct'. Judge Lady Hood deferred sentencing for reports, with Russell remanded in custody pending his sentencing in the New Year. The case was reported by The Press and Journal, highlighting the severe impact on the terrified young victims.
