Robert Merfyn Williams, a 66-year-old physiotherapist based in Shropshire, has been sentenced to 15 months' imprisonment following his conviction for sexual assault. The case, handled by West Mercia Police, came to light after Williams assaulted one of his patients at his practice in Mardol, Shrewsbury. The incident occurred during what was supposed to be a routine treatment for the victim's painful knee.

The trial took place at Shrewsbury Crown Court over two days in December 2024, where Williams was found guilty. Court proceedings revealed that Williams exploited his professional position to carry out the sexual assault on the female victim. This breach of trust highlighted the vulnerabilities patients face in medical settings, particularly when seeking relief from physical ailments.

Detective Constable Nick Williams from Shropshire’s Reactive CID commented on the case, stating: “I commend the courage of the victim in this case to come forward and for her resilience and determination over the last couple of years as she waited for the trial to take place.
