Offence Summary

Sholan James was convicted of assault of an underage girl by penetration and sentenced to 6 years in prison.

Full Description

Sholan James, aged 30 and of New House Road, Sheepridge, Huddersfield, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on 20 August 2021 in connection with West Yorkshire Police's Operation Tendersea investigation into non-recent child sexual exploitation in Kirklees. Following a nine-day trial in May 2021, a jury convicted him after more than eight hours of deliberation on a charge related to the sexual abuse of a 15-year-old girl.

A few years after the 2006 rape of an 18-year-old woman, James, along with Saqib Raheel and a third man, sexually abused the 15-year-old victim before she was raped by Raheel. The girl was targeted due to her vulnerability and isolation, with the abuse occurring in a flat. Judge Simon Phillips QC described the grooming as 'insidious and persistent', noting that victims were often children or young persons from challenging family backgrounds, leading some to return home 'almost senseless' and comply out of fear.

  • Conviction: Assault of an underage girl by penetration in relation to the second victim.

The court heard victim statements outlining long-term trauma, including anxiety, suicidal ideation, and difficulties trusting others or maintaining jobs. Prosecutor Kate Batty detailed the humiliation inflicted, with one victim feeling like a 'burden' and questioning if she had been 'too friendly'. Judge Phillips addressed the defendants, emphasising the vulnerability of the complainants and the need for severe penalties to protect young girls.

James received a 6-year custodial sentence. The judge explained, 'The sentences are severe and intended to be so and to deter others from behaving in this way. The courts have to do what they can to protect young girls from abuse.' This case underscores the patterns of exploitation revealed in Operation Tendersea, involving multiple perpetrators in Huddersfield's historic grooming network.
