Offence Summary

Kunwar Patton, a former school governor, was jailed for sexually assaulting a teenage girl and taking indecent photographs of her, using the images to blackmail her into further abuse. He died in prison from natural causes while serving his sentence.

Full Description

Kunwar Patton, a 57-year-old former governor of two schools in Everton, Liverpool, was convicted of serious sexual offences against a teenage girl. At the time of his sentencing in 2018, Patton was 51 years old and resided on Argyl Road in Anfield. He was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court to eight years and nine months in prison after being found guilty of multiple charges related to the abuse.

The court heard disturbing details of Patton's actions, which involved taking indecent photographs of the victim. While capturing these images, he would manipulate her into specific poses, make lewd comments about his intentions, and select underwear for her to wear. He repeatedly touched her exposed breasts and, on two occasions—including once when she was 15—committed more serious sexual assaults. Patton exploited the photographs to blackmail the girl, threatening to distribute them unless she complied with further sexual activity. If she resisted, he would physically force her into the desired positions.

Patton pleaded guilty to taking eight indecent photographs and possessing 110 indecent images in the least serious category. He was convicted on two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual activity with a child. The investigation and trial revealed the extent of his predatory behaviour, which came to light through unspecified circumstances leading to his arrest.

Tragically, Patton died on 11 September 2024 while incarcerated at HMP Liverpool, succumbing to a heart attack and coronary artery atheroma, compounded by conditions such as high cholesterol, stage 4 chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. An investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO), published on 7 November 2024, confirmed that his death was due to natural causes and that the clinical care he received in custody met community standards. The PPO's report, which included consultations with Patton's family—his wife and daughter—found no issues of concern and made no recommendations. An inquest on 25 September 2024 corroborated the natural causes verdict.

The PPO expressed condolences to Patton's family and reaffirmed its role in ensuring safe custody through independent probes into detention deaths. Patton's crimes underscore the vulnerability of young people to exploitation by those in positions of authority, such as school governors.
