Offence Summary

Robert Sutcliffe, a former assistant headteacher at Knowleswood Primary School in Bradford, was convicted of distributing indecent images of children and received a suspended prison sentence before being banned from teaching for life.

Full Description

Robert Sutcliffe, aged 39, served as an assistant headteacher at Knowleswood Primary School in Holme Wood, Bradford, until his arrest on 30 March 2021 for distributing indecent images of children. The offences came to light through an investigation that led to his referral to the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) in April 2021, resulting in his immediate dismissal by the school's governing body at the time.

Sutcliffe appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court on 14 July 2022, where he admitted to distributing five category A images—the most severe classification involving penetrative sexual activity, sexual activity with an animal, or sadism—along with four category B images and five category C images. These pseudo-photographs depicted children in explicit and abusive scenarios. On 4 August 2022, at Leeds Crown Court, he was sentenced to a 20-month custodial term, suspended for two years. The court recognised the gravity of the offences, noting their potential impact on the safety of pupils and the public, despite the TRA report clarifying that the material did not involve children from the school.

The TRA conducted a professional conduct panel hearing on 3 April 2025, which unanimously determined that Sutcliffe's actions constituted unacceptable professional conduct and brought the teaching profession into disrepute. A spokesperson for the Exceed Academies Trust, which now manages the school but was not involved during the incident, confirmed the offences were unrelated to school activities. Consequently, a lifetime prohibition order was imposed, barring Sutcliffe from teaching in any school, sixth form college, relevant youth accommodation, or children’s home in England. The outcome was published on 15 April 2025, as part of the TRA's public records of 242 hearings that year up to 23 December 2025.
